It was an interesting offseason for the Texans, who traded All-Pro receiver DeAndre Hopkins to the Cardinals in exchange for running back David Johnson and draft picks. Later, reports surfaced that the reasons for the trade with Hopkins had to do with tensions between the receiver and Houston head coach Bill O`Brien. Watt addressed his coach`s negative reaction from team fans after the decision to trade Hopkins. Whenever Watt looks for a new contract, he`s likely to do so in a situation of higher salary cap in Houston, with quarterback Deshaun Watson expecting to strike a massive deal when his rookie contract expires in 2021. The pro-rated credit for his signing bonus gives a figure of $2.4 million per year, compared to $6 million with a two-year contract. This makes its capping fee for 2021 $4.9 million, which represents the salary and bonus portion of $2.5 million. Without having the whole contract in front of me, I can`t tell you exactly how the money is structured. But it seems likely that this $100 million extension over six years looks more like an eight-year, $100 million extension. As a reminder, it was first said that the two-year contract was worth $31 million, with $23 million guaranteed. To be clear, these figures are not inaccurate.

As an older player, he was guaranteed 74% of his new team contract. According to Over The Cap, the Texans would pay Watt $1.9 million this season and $6.9 million in 2015. According to John McClain of the Houston Chronicle, they revised those numbers. The Cardinals could alleviate some of the capping issues by making cuts to the lineup. But they can also do it by structuring contracts in a certain way. Of the $23 million guaranteed, $20 million is fully guaranteed upon signing, while the remaining $3 million is only guaranteed for injuries. That $3 million of his base salary for 2022 will be fully guaranteed in March 2022 when he receives a $2.25 million roster bonus.
